Grand Mosque of Tangier

Built on the foundations of a Roman temple, the Great Mosque of the Medina of Tangier is one of the most important religious sites in the Strait of Gibraltar since antiquity. It was transformed into a Catholic church during the Portuguese period, then became a Muslim temple permanently in 1684 by the Alaouite dynasty after the victory against the English. This mosque, of Moorish-Andalusian style, white and green, represents the spirituality of an open city facing its bay.
